Observation Narrative
Plot location: Maple Flats pond complex, ca. 0.5 miles N of the Coal Road where it crosses Canada Run.
Rock Types Present: bedrock covered by a thick alluvial fan of metasedimentary materials.
This plot was placed in the well-defined outer zone of the west pond of Twin Pond. This pond is a 2.0 m deep basin that does not dry completely in most years (Buhlmann, Mitchell & Smith 1999). The edge zone is considerably higher than the pond center and has been dry by the end of most summers when it was visited by DCR-DNH biologists. The vegetation of this zone is distinct and dominated by the forbs Helenium virginicum and Boltonia cf. asteroides (this taxon merits taxonomic investigation).
